Culture

Buddhism as been the principle religion of the country for centuries. Buddhist culture and traditions govern the lives of the citizens. This has remained undiluted over the centuries. It is only now, with the advent of tourism and consequent intermingling that modernization is slowly creeping in. In this culture great respect is given to the elders.

Bhutan has been called a living museum because its Dzongs and temples are still used as functioning centres of governance and religious activities respectively. It was a custom, that one of the sons of every family joined the monastic order till the age of 10 years. However, this has not turned the country into a nation of ascetic or saintly monks. The population consists of vibrant, fun loving well educated people whose life is guided by Drupka Kagyuap Buddhism – their official religion.
